GETTING A GRIP

Combining unique style with conspicuous off-the-wall fashion along with almost unrivaled practicality is a one of a kind ability and something Citroen used to be and are once again becoming renowned for. Seemingly now allowed the freedom to express their automotive individuality the newly face lifted range increase the division between their conventional models and the now stand alone DS range.

Powered by the same 81hp 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine, the new C1 Furio’s gloss black alloy rims, body graphics, twin chrome tailpipes and enhanced interior detailing have given Citroen’s already successful town car sporting overtones. Along with it’s Peugeot equivalent, the C1 consistently proves its well deserved popularity, the performance of the diminutive power unit and 5-speed transmission more than able to live up to the small hatch’s more purposeful demeanour.

Remaining a model customers either love or hate, the new SUV inclined C4 Cactus Rip Curl sees Citroen team up with the Australian surf gear brand. Separating themselves from the standard models although once again powered by the same 110hp, turbo charged 1,198cc 3-cylinder engine, striking black or white paintwork with matching air bumps and alloy wheels shod with all-weather tyres, front and rear graphics denote the partnership.

To enhance the newly formed partnership the Cactus Rip Curl also features the Citroen-Peugeot trick front Grip Control axle, the five settings giving the car enhanced traction over a variety of more demanding surfaces. Not to be confused with a true off-roader, the Grip Control axle and marginally increased ride height together add a remarkable degree of rough track and wet grass ability to the Cactus whilst the fact the now more subtle, colour keyed air bumps now blend in with the car reduces their visual impact to a more acceptable level. There’s also the Cactus ‘W’ or White which as the name suggests is the model’s overriding colour scheme but without the uprated front wheels.

Those looking for a more family orientated, multi-functional vehicle will now find the C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso more appealing. Adopting the C4 Cactus lighting arrangement, both vehicles incorporate Citroen’s Active Comfort interior system, the airy, spacious cabin as near to conceptual as any manufacturer is prepared to get. With graphic readouts replacing conventional instrumentation, a lightness of feel and a sensation of unlimited space in either five or seven seat formats, the 4-cylinder turbo assisted engines propel the Picassos along with remarkable efficiency and acceptable economy, the improved external features bringing the Picassos more into line with the rest of the Citroen range.

Utilising the Grand C4 Picasso’s floor pan, the new light commercial Dispatch van is able to capitalise on its underpinnings, the independent MacPherson strut and anti-roll bar front suspension and rear hydraulic dampers and coils giving the van a more car like feel on the road. Light to drive and sufficiently relaxing to spend extended periods of time behind the wheel with the option of two or three seats, the 4-cylinder 1,560cc transversely mounted turbo diesel delivers a respectable 94hp and lively performance.

Adopting a more two-box van like appearance the new bodywork offers 5.1 cu/m of cargo space and a 1,100kg maximum load capacity. Similarly, the sensibly weighted power steering and 11.3m turning circle should maintain the Dispatch model’s appeal for those looking for a small van that’s still slightly larger than many others within the class.

As PSA now try to differentiate between the now three brands within the group, Citroen’s now more distinct models should allow customers to make a more defined and considered choice. Likewise, the more distinct looks also means that the single most important aspect of any Citroen is now returning. And whilst the overtly quirky looks may still be some way ahead, the 2016 models go at least part way to recovering Citroen’s long lost DNA.
